Fed: ALP rejects US missile defence co operation
The ALP's national conference in Hobart has called on the federal government to abandon
its support for the US missile defence shield.
And the conference says the project would be abandoned under a Labor government.
However, foreign affairs spokesman LAURIE BRERETON says Labor's opposition to America's
national missile defence system doesn't diminish its support for the US alliance.
The HOWARD government has supported the US plan to protect itself from nuclear attack
through a national missile defence system.
However, Labor says it opposes the plan on the grounds that it could reignite the nuclear
arms race.
Mr BRERETON says it means being honest with the US and if necessary, telling them they're
embarking on something that's ill-considered and likely to be counter-productive.
